Symbiosis is a public art residency that fosters a mutually beneficial relationship between artists and the surrounding community in the International District.
The Symbiosis residency connects 4 selected artists with the community to create public art in one of the most diverse and underserved neighborhoods in Albuquerque. The artists selected have demonstrated they are committed to investing creative energy into, learning from, and growing with the community. Artists were selected by a jury consisting of Helen Atkins, Pico del Hierro-Villa, and Rebeca Alderete Baca.
Unlike traditional residencies that designate a studio space for artists, the site of this residency is the International District. Artists will spend the first month of their residency interacting with community members to learn about their needs, desires, and passions. Through this research, each artist will create 2 artworks, one for each side of a sign located at 6720 Central Ave SE. Artworks will be on view for 3 months per artist.
This project is funded by a grant from the City of Albuquerque Department of Arts & Culture, Public Art Urban Enhancement Trust Fund.
