Plain Site was a collaboration during the fall semester of 2019 between the UNMAM, UNM art students, and Friends of the Orphan Signs to design, produce and install artwork for two empty (orphaned) roadsigns on UNM property on the southside of Lomas, west of University, at approximately 1100 Lomas NE., Albuquerque. Artwork production by UNM art Practices students was thematically guided by responding to the concurrent exhibition at UNMAM of the photographs of Lewis Baltz from the series “ New Industrial Parks Near Irvine, California.”
Adjunct Art Practices instructor Lindsey Fromm, and Assistant Professor of Art Practices (and FOS Director) Ellen Babcock, designed and implemented curriculum in their classrooms and collaborated across their two classes to develop the imagery for these signs. The final artworks were juried by the UNM Art Museum’s Director of Education.
