Part 1: Origin Story
Friends of Orphan Signs director Lindsey Fromm walks cohort (lead artist Malcolm King and Working Classroom youth artists) through the project’s origin story during our field trip to Albuquerque’s outdoor Neon Sign Museum, a collection of signs owned by Ed and Carlos Garcia stored outdoors at their Gloria Station property.
Part 2: Site Visit
Working Classroom youth cohort takes a trip to the proposed orphan sign located on historic Route 66 just west of Albuquerque’s Old Town. Youth took inventory of the surrounding area through illustration, photography, and video. The trip concluded with a brainstorming session where ideas were shared regarding how to revitalize the signage with a community message.
Part 3: Sketch Presentation
Youth artists shared their concept sketches for potential orphan signage. The cohort used visual storytelling to illustrate their concept of “Doom and Bloom” through local iconography and symbols.
